Psychiatric Acute Mobility (PAM) The PAM unit started as a project in April 2015 to meet the need for emergency mobile psychiatric care outside the hospital and to reduce stigma. Since 2017, PAM has been included as part of the pre-hospital emergency care in Stockholm County.

︎ Financed by the Stockholm county council
PAM stands for Psychiatric Acute Mobility. The ambulance has no stretcher, but instead there are chairs for conversations with patients and relatives to make assessments of patients of all ages, including children and adolescents, who have suffered from acute mental illness.

The PAM unit started as a project in April 2015 to meet the need for emergency mobile psychiatric care outside the hospital and to reduce stigma. Since 2017, PAM has been included as part of the pre-hospital emergency care in Stockholm County.

The PAM unit's task is to make efforts in emergency suicidal situations as well as emergency psychiatric assessments outside the hospital area. During December 2020 through March 2021, two emergency vehicles are in operation. The alarms, which are sent from SOS Alarm, apply to the entire Stockholm County. The efforts relieve the police and the regular ambulance.

The business is run in close collaboration between Norra Stockholm's psychiatry and AISAB, the ambulance service in Greater Stockholm AB. AISAB is responsible for the vehicles and an ambulance paramedic in each car, while Norra Stockholm's psychiatry staffs each session with two specialist nurses in psychiatry.

With the aim to handle acute psychiatric assessments outside the hospital as well as acute suicidal situations, the PAM units operate every day. The vehicles are dispatched from SOS Alarm (the same communication system as the police, the ambulance and the fire brigade) for assignments all over Stockholm county.

In 2020, there were approximately 206 consultations per month, which amounts to 6-7 per work session. Patients are usually 20-34 years old. More than 40% of people could stay at home after assessment, and a little more than one in four patience were transportered to the psychiatric clinic in Stockholm county.
